I. 'Reinventing CT' Discussion
'Reinventing CT' outreach was held on the previous day (Nov. 16, 2011) at UConn-Torrington with Catherine Smith & Ron Angelo outlining new initiatives as part of 'Reinventing CT.' Many of the new initiatives are aimed at small businesses, job creation, manufacturing and workforce development.
JoAnn Ryan said the she was impressed and found the new initiatives "refreshing and revitalizing." Bill Baxter said that DECD is "really trying to deliver" and create more jobs in CT. Those that attended felt that the Malloy administration is being pro-active and aggressive in creating a better state economy.
II. Report from CEDS Steering Committee
Doug Parker reported that the CEDS Steering Committee met to create a list of potential members of the CEDS Committee. The CEDS Committee should be broad-based and be representative of NW CT. The majority of members on the CEDS Committee must be from the private sector.
III. CEDS Committee
The list of potential candidates for the CEDS Committee was reviewed and several suggestions were made for additions to the proposed list. Invitations will be sent to those identified for the CEDS Committee. A date of Tuesday, December 13th was set for the first CEDS Committee meeting to be held at the NW CT Chamber of Commerce in Torrington. (The time was later changed to 9:30 - 11:00 am due to a conflict with a Torrington Development Corporation meeting being held from 8:00 - 9:30 am)
IV. CEDS Focus Groups
After discussion, the CEDS Focus groups were re-defined as:
Manufacturing
Agriculture
Service Sector (Health Care/Financial/Retail, etc.)
Workforce Development
Culture & Tourism (Revitalizing Town/City/Village Centers)
Brownfields/Commercial Real Estate
Small businesses (home-based, construction, etc.)
Infrastructure (transportation, energy, broadband, etc.)
V. NWCTEDC BOD Nominees
Several names were suggested and agreed upon by those present. Those individuals will be contacted by Doug and a slate will be proposed at the January annual meeting.
VI. Updates
JoAnn updated everyone on the status of the Welcome Center and shared information about the CERC - 'Celebrate CT' honorees (BD & Northwestern CT Community College)
Meeting was adjourned at 9:30 a.m.
