Make An Impact Program
Alcoa Howmet
Winsted, CT
The Make An Impact program was launched in 2008 and provided Alcoa employees the tools and knowledge to manage their individual environmental impact. This year Winsted was invited to participate in the Make An Impact: Changing Our 2morrow School Challenge.
The program engages teachers, students and parents in learning how to use energy more efficiently by visiting the Make an Impact website and completing the carbon calculator and energy efficiency checklist. The participating schools in five Alcoa communities across the country will compete from February 1 - February 29 to win a $5,000 grant or one of four $1,000 grants from Alcoa Foundation. The winning schools are determined by the highest number of Make an Impact carbon calculator and student checklist completions, as a percentage of the student body
population. There will be one winning school per community.
Our participating schools are: The Gilbert Middle School and Northwestern Region 7 Middle School.
As noted this program is not only for the students, but our community. Anyone can complete the carbon calculator or pledge list by visiting www.alcoa.com/makeanimpact. Once they reach the site our colleagues, family and friends can identify themselves as an associate of The Gilbert School or Northwestern Region 7 and their responses will go to help our community schools win the Alcoa Foundation Grant.
We would greatly appreciate any assistance you can offer in helping us spread the word across our community. Attached for your review is the 2011 CO2 Case Study which summarizes the programs inaugural year and a letter reviewing the program.
As part of Alcoa's efforts to make a positive impact on our environment and the communities in which we operate, we are introducing an exciting program to spread the word about energy efficiency. On February 1, we launched the Make an Impact: Change Our 2morrow (CO2) schools challenge. We are encouraging students, parents and teachers to measure and reduce their carbon footprint while competing for a chance to win $5,000 or $1,000 grants from the Alcoa Foundation.
The following schools in our community The Gilbert Middle School and Northwestern Region #7 Middle School are participating alongside 6 other schools from across the country. The winning schools will be determined based on the highest number of Make an Impact carbon calculator and checklist completions during the challenge, from Feb. 1 to 29.
As a valued community leader, you can get involved by completing the Make an Impact carbon calculator and/or the pledge list online at http://alcoa.c2es.org/challenge. To kick-off the challenge, Alcoa Howmet Winsted held assemblies at each of the schools and throughout the month of February each school will have student activities around the Make an Impact: Change Our 2morrow (CO2) schools challenge.
Make an Impact is a partnership between Alcoa and the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions (formerly Pew Center on Global Climate Change) intended to help employees, their families and surrounding communities reduce energy use, save money and become an active part of climate change solutions.
The Make an Impact program features a science-based, dynamic website ( www.alcoa.com/makeanimpact) with tips, tools and resources to help each of us reduce our energy bills and live more sustainably; a carbon calculator to understand the impact of our choices and plan simple actions to change; and an outreach and education program supported by the science and experience of our partners at C2ES.
Wherever Alcoa operates, we want to be an active and productive member of the community. We are excited to launch Make an Impact: CO2 in Winsted and see the message of energy efficiency spread and benefit us all.
